Autumn in the High Country. The aspens are beginning to change colors, the first snow of winter has dusted the mountain tops, and hundreds turned out to celebrate Oktoberfest in Breckenridge! That’s right for two days Breckenridge’s Main Street shut down to host one of Colorado’s best beer festivals. Breckenridge Brewery and Paulaner were on hand to provide several variations of ale and pilsners. Toasted Head Winery rounded out the drink menu by having samplings of some of their most popular bottles. But as much of a draw as well designed steins and enough kegs to criss-cross Colorado with, the biggest draw has to be the wonderful food and atmosphere.
Those Austrian Guys were on hand to get the crowds riled up with traditional Austrian & Bavarian tunes; from polkas to the chicken dance the band was in their element. And the food…don’t get me started, they had everything under the sun. Of course there was the traditional bratwursts, schnitzel, and pretzels. But there were also stands dedicated to turkey legs, funnel cakes, grilled corn and a whole host of other delicious festival food. Sure there was some rain and chilly weather on Saturday, but that didn’t dampen any spirits or keep the crowds away. The one element of Breckenridge’s Oktoberfest that is a bit of a bummer are the long lines to get beer. But, with friends by your side and a whole afternoon to enjoy the festival the lines really aren’t that bad. And you know what they say, “Good things come to those who wait”, Prost!
Learning to live green can be tough in a concrete jungle, but that’s where the Green Route Festival comes in! Held Saturday, August 27th, the Green Route Eco Music Festival and its sponsors help to raise awareness within communities to be as green as can be. Vendors will be there showing off a wide array of green technology for your home and lifestyle. Astralux and The Solar Revolution will show off their residential panels and Solera Apartments will exhibit their luxury, green apartments. Plenty of local, eco-conscious restaurateurs will be there with their wares, including Steuben’s Food Truck and Root Down Restaurant. More than 10 bands will play live music, including Fingers of the Sun and Flashlights. Representatives from the Sea Shepard Conservation Society, (those guys on Whale Wars) will also have a booth at the festival. Busker performers and RiNo artist’s original works will be there from noon until 11 p.m. so come on down and enjoy a Saturday afternoon in the River North District.

I can’t think of a better way to unwind my work week thqn with good music, good beer and good friends. So you could say I’m more than a little excited for Music at the Bottom: a concert/ Happy Hour/weekend celebration right in the heart of Downtown Denver (16th & Curtis). The shindig is sponsored by Rock Bottom Brewery, KBCO and Alphagraphics, and it kicks of at 4 p.m. each Friday with the bands taking the stage from 5 – 7 p.m.
Already Rock Bottom patrons and concert goers have been grooving with the great sounds of Jakarta and the powerfully talented Hazel Miller. Not to be outdone, Funkiphino and the The Champions take the stage this Friday, June 17. You might not know that they were named by Westword as “Best Funk Band” – they are 12 pieces of pure fun(k)!
I would advise you to get there early because the place gets packed. So come on 9-to-5ers! Let’s relax with good tunes and a cold beer in hand!
