Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Denver is doing its part by once again hosting a Race for the Cure 5K. Taking place on Sunday, October 2 participants will leave from the Pepsi Center and follow a 5K course through Denver, ultimately finishing at the Auraria Campus with a Survivor Celebration Ceremony. The 5K Inspiration Run begins at 7 a.m., while the 5K Celebration Walk begins at 8 a.m., followed by a Family 1K Fun Run at 9 a.m. More than 50,000 attendees turned the streets of Denver Pink last year with their support and there is sure to be another big crowd this year. Zombie Dash 2011
Whether you are trying to survive the upcoming Zombie Apocalypse or part of the ever growing flesh eating, walking dead horde, the first ever Zombie Dashis for you. This unique urban race competition takes place throughout Downtown Denver featuring teams of 2 to 6 players facing challenges and answering Denver trivia questions at each checkpoint. Racers are only allowed to walk/run or use public transportation during the race, no bikes or cabs allowed! Esquire Theater Screening Shaun of the Dead
Keeping up with the spooky and scary theme for October, Esquire is doing a special midnight screening of Shaun of the Dead! The brilliant comedic team of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost deliver a heart pounding and thrilling tale of a down and out Brit trying to sort out his personal life in the midst of zombie uprising! Free Day at the Denver Art Museum

For the entire day the Denver Art Museum will not be charging admittance to Colorado residents. So for the next week all you readers are in for a special treat. I’ll be gone from Denver, but I’ll be documenting my Colorado Mountain West roadtrip! I’ll make sure to fill you in on fun activities to do, great places to stay and eat all while passing through much of Colorado’s mountain towns, like Aspen, Crested Butte, Pagosa Springs, Telluride, and Buena Vista. But since I’ll be out of touch with Denver for the next week or so, I figured it would be nice to mention some of the fascinating events going on while I’ll be gone.
Now that the Tour de France is over its time for the next best thing: USA Pro Cycling Challenge comes to the Rockies this August, and its finish line party is right in the heart of Denver! After a grueling 518 mile, 7 day journey through the rugged Colorado Rockies, 128 of the world’s greatest riders will cross the finish line on Broadway; right in front of the State Capital. Revel in the cycling sport and relax with riders at the finish line festival. Featuring live music, good food, the latest cycling gear and a full fledged beer garden this stage is sure to be the best of the race. Make sure to get there on time as the winner of this seven day ride will be crowned in the Mile High City. The race starts in Salida and ends on Sunday August 28 at Civic Center Park in Denver. The Denver Croquet Festival presents Through Hoops to Hope, which will be held on Wednesdays from August 24 – September 21 at Republic Plaza. The Festival will be raising money for the Alzheimer’s Association to raise awareness of the disease of dementia and increase the quality of life for those suffering with the disease. If you’re interested, there are 3 ways to play in the festival. You and a partner can enter as a team of two and play on specified Wednesdays, you can reserve the court for an hour, or you can simply swing by for free play. Courts can be reserved between 1 – 4 p.m. while open play is from 1 – 5 p.m. No experience is necessary, so swing by Downtown and bring some friends to have a laugh and hit some balls.
Ever felt like taking a bike ride with a few friends? How about a few hundred? Every Wednesday night at 7 p.m. the Denver Cruisers hit the streets of downtown. Starting from three Denver area bars and restaurants, these riders go out for a one-of-a-kind tour of Denver. If you don’t have a bike, see this as an opportunity to utilize your local B-cycle station! Feel free to dress the part, each week there is a new theme for the riders (this week’s is Angels & Devils). Although the aim of the Cruisers is to have fun, make sure to ride safe. Come explore one of Denver’s best Open Air Market on Thursday, August 25 Downtown at Skyline Park. Since we can’t be everywhere all at once it can be hard to decide how to spend one’s precious weekend. With options all over Downtown Denver, within your community and neighborhood, and always something to do in the Colorado Rockies, its tough to narrow down your day. So without any further ado, here is a rundown on this weekend’s many events, with a little something for everyone.
Starting bright and early on Saturday morning is the 24th Annual AIDS Walk Colorado, the Rocky Mountain region’s biggest and most successful HIV/AIDS research fundraiser. More than 8,000 members of the Colorado community come together at Cheeseman Park united in an effort to stop this deadly disease. Throughout the day there will be live entertainment, a 5K run/walk, a 1/2K fun run, volleyball and a Celebration of Life festival. Vendors will be there serving great food and drinks, as well as exhibiting panels from the National AIDS Quilt. Proceeds will benefit HIV/AIDS clients of Colorado AIDS Project, in addition to 20 other AIDS institutions. Even if your not the running type this will be a great place to spend a Saturday morning, out in the fresh air with plenty of friendly faces, so what are you waiting for?
Are you the kind of person who always has the camera out? You know, a true shutterbug? Well if that’s the case you’re in luck as the Colorado Photography Festival comes to the Auraria Campus Saturday – Monday this weekend. Don’t miss this opportunity to look through the lenses of six of the nation’s premier nature photographers. All weekend great photographers and artists will descend on Denver for the Colorado Photography Festival, showcasing wonderful photos as well as teaching you some tricks of the trade. Saturday’s symposium includes talks aimed at improving one’s skills; Sunday’s workshops offer specific lessons (such as nighttime landscape lessons); and Monday wraps it all up with a seminar on Lightroom work and Photoshop.
